I never fully understood either High School Musical or Hannah Montana fanaticism, despite being contrary to the popular belief I am a 12-year old girl. But I follow the teen stars that dominate Disney fan bases because it was only a matter of time before one of them did something stupid. Our prayers were answered when Hannah Montana – the alter ego of Miley Cyrus – made an ass out of herself with a camera nearby.
In an attempt to appeal to a wider “ethnic” population, Miley has adopted yet another personality to add to her collection. This one is Asian, complete with slanted eyes. If I must say one thing positive about her talent, she really goes all out to get into character. The only problem here is that, well, it’s pretty damn offensive to Asians and they’re not afraid to let her know.
“The photograph of Miley Cyrus and other individuals slanting their eyes currently circulating the Internet is offensive to the Asian Pacific American community and sets a terrible example for her many young fans,” says OCA executive director George Wu in a statement. “Not only has Miley Cyrus and the other individuals in the photograph encouraged and legitimized the taunting and mocking of people of Asian descent, she has also insulted her many Asian Pacific American fans.”
Wu also included that including an actual honest-to-goodness Asian in the photo “does not make it acceptable.” Foiled again, Hannah!
Being the rising Disney star that she is, we can only surmise that she is in training for Mulan III or a remake of Lady and the Tramp as one of the Siamese cats.
